STEMskiller: Skill Set Map for Mentors of Early Career Researchers
LEARNING, TEACHING, AND SUPERVISING: Techniques: Early career researchers in the classroom
eLearning & learning management systems
Definition:
As 2020 events have shown, mentors should prepare mentees for rapid transitions between classroom and online learning environments. This includes knowing what institutional resources and support systems exist for online environments as well as basic understanding of online teaching technologies, trends, and mechanisms for creating, administering, and evaluating effective online courses. If guides for local institutions do not yet exist, including guides to local eLearning/learning management systems, institutions should create such guides for successful navigation of the 2020/2021 academic terms.
Useful resources on eLearning & learning management systems:
Berkeley Center for Teaching and Learning. (2020). Remote best practices. https://teaching.berkeley.edu/resources/remote-best-practices
Checklist for instructors; guide for holding remote examinations (proctoring process at a glance); flipping the remote classroom; remote labs, studios, and other non-classroom spaces; remote attendance and participation policies; creating a healthy remote environment (i.e., responding to hostile behavior online, diversity and inclusion); supporting students with disabilities remotely; and tips for remote instruction.
Berkeley Graduate Division Graduate Student Instructor Teaching & Resource Center. (2020). Teaching with technology. https://gsi.berkeley.edu/gsi-guide-contents/technology-intro/
Tips (not just for GAs/GTAs/GRAS!) for communication between instructors and students; tools for homework, study, and collaboration outside of class; assignments, grades, and record-keeping (specific to Berkeley online system, but other institutions using other tools could use this content as a model for their own eLearning systems); examples for using discussion forums, online chat, and online collaborative editing; what to watch out for when using third-party technology; deciding what to use (including technology brainstorming worksheet); and web resources and how-to guides. Includes summary PDF.
Stanford Online. (2020). Stanford online resources for learning during COVID-19. https://online.stanford.edu/resources-for-learning-during-COVID-19
Resources open to anyone include: teaching anywhere (including best practices), online course creation essentials (PDF with quick start checklists for planning, developing, and delivering your course, what to expect when moving a course online, what effective online learning looks like, developing an online course, and appendices related to accessibility, legal considerations, and online discussion forms), and even resources for K-12 educators (grades 7-12 and the Stanford Graduate School of Education).
