How a polytechnic workshop works?

The NTK Polytechnic Workshop provides access to modern machinery and tools. Here you can turn your creative ideas into reality, prototype and learn to work with new technologies. The workshop also serves as a space for repairing or making small part.

What you need to use the Polytechnic Workshop

  1. Have a valid registration with NTK (and a documented address in the Czech Republic - this rule is for the purpose of recovering any damage caused to the equipment in the workshop)except for groups G, GC, M (non-EU foreigners without documented address).

Welding Workshop of the NTK Polytechnic Workshop

The off-site welding workshop of the NTK Polytechnic Workshop is located in the hall laboratories building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, CTU in Prague, in the Dejvice campus. It is a shared facility operated by the Department of Manufacturing Technology (ÚST) and the National Library of Technology (NTK), expanding practical education, prototyping, and technical training opportunities to include welding technologies.

The collaboration between the NTK Polytechnic Workshop and the Department of Manufacturing Technology of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, CTU began in 2024 in response to growing demand for access to traditional technologies such as welding. NTK, as a public institution committed to open technical education, sought to offer workshop users access to facilities requiring increased safety measures, specialized supervision, and professional expertise.

The Department of Manufacturing Technology responded positively by opening its training and research welding laboratory and providing professional oversight. The result is a shared-use model that opens the facility to registered NTK customers at designated times.

This model serves as a successful example of public-academic infrastructure sharing, connecting university expertise with the ope -access mission of a national library.

Welding Methods Available

The workshop is equipped with five individual welding stations, offering a broad range of commonly used processes:

  • Manual Metal Arc (MMA) – shielded metal arc welding
  • MIG/MAG welding – gas metal arc welding in protective atmosphere (CO₂ or mixed gases)
  • TIG welding – tungsten inert gas welding in protective atmosphere
  • MicroTIG welding – precise TIG variant suitable for fine work
  • Stud welding – capacitor discharge welding of threaded studs
