Title: Large-Scale Open Access, Non-Profit Collaborative Humanities Repositories (& Why Publishers Care)

Abstract:

In this presentation, I will examine several large-scale open access, non-profit collaborative humanities repositories being created in the United States, including conceptual infrastructures, funding models, and how copyright issues are being addressed.

I will also discuss why publishers (particularly in the humanities) are contributing to these initiatives, why institutions are increasingly utilizing collaborative approaches in a non-profit manner, and what kinds of data records/standards are being utilized for different projects.

Initiatives to be examined will include, among others: The Digital Public Library of America and Open ARTstor's contributions to the project; ARTstor's Shared Shelf Commons and Images for Academic Publishing program; the Hathi Trust Digital Library; and JSTOR's Early Journal Content and Register & Read programs.

Bio:

Stephanie Krueger is Head of the Czech National Library of Technology's Communications/Fundraising Department. Prior to coming to Prague in early 2013, she worked for non-profit organizations originally created by the Mellon Foundation for improving access to scholarly material (textual materials, sound, and images - JSTOR, DRAM, and ARTstor) as well as Swiss Institute NYC. She holds an MS in Information (University of Michigan) and an MA in Educational Technology Leadership (George Washington University). She was a Fulbright Student Scholar (University of Leipzig, 1994-95) and is a doctoral student at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
